Honeydew abundance in two areas at St Arnaud

چکیده

There was a similar density of honeydew threads on the flanks of the StArnaud Range and in southern Big Bush, and we suggest that the abundance of honey-dew threads need not be a consideration in deciding which of the two areas is selected as a "mainland island". The abundance of honeydew threads/ha was highly variable, particularly along the St Arnaud Range, and this area tended to have more honeydew threads than Big Bush. The abundance of honeydew threads was not measured in the canopy. We may have underestimated the abundance of honeydew threads by a greater degree in Big Bush than StArnaud because the trees tended to be larger there.

SHORT COMMUNICATION Preliminary evidence suggests that beech scale insect honeydew has a negative effect on terrestrial litter decomposition rates in Nothofagus forests of New Zealand

Honeydew production by New Zealand beech scale insects (Ultracoelostoma spp., Hemiptera: Margarodidae) is widely considered to have a positive influence on native animal abundance and ecosystem functioning. As a first assessment of whether there is a positive relationship between honeydew throughfall and litter decomposition rates, we placed experimental litter bags in each of 10 high and 10 lo...

Forestry Alters Foraging Efficiency and Crop Contents of Aphid-Tending Red Wood Ants, Formica aquilonia

Forest management alters species behaviours, distributions and interactions. To evaluate forestry effects on ant foraging performance, we compared the quality and quantity of honeydew harvested by ants among clear-cuts, middle-aged and mature spruce-dominated stands in boreal forests in Sweden. Honeydew quality was examined using honeydew collected by squeezing the gasters of laden Formica aqui...

Fitness Effects of Food Resources on the Polyphagous Aphid Parasitoid, Aphidius colemani Viereck (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Aphidiinae)

Conservation biological control involving the polyphagous aphid parasitoid, Aphidius colemani Viereck, may include provisioning resources from a variety of plant sources. The fitness of adult A. colemani was enhanced with the provision of food resources such as floral nectar from a range of both native and introduced plant species and aphid honeydew under laboratory conditions. However, enhance...

The Effect of Temperature Increases on an Ant-Hemiptera-Plant Interaction

Global temperature increases are significantly altering species distributions and the structure of ecological communities. However, the impact of temperature increases on multi- species interactions is poorly understood. We used an ant-Hemiptera-plant interaction to examine the potential outcomes of predicted temperature increases for each partner and for the availability of honeydew, a keyston...

Factors Affecting Abundance and Damage Caused by Cabbage Aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae on Four Brassica Leafy Vegetables: Brassica oleracea var. Acephala, B. chinense, B. napus and B. carinata

Resistance of four brassica leafy vegetables: kale, Chinese cabbage, rape and Ethiopian mustard to cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae (L.) was studied in cage experiments at the Botswana College of Agriculture, Gaborone, Botswana. A completely randomised design with cultivars as treatments and four replicates per treatment was used. One newly laid nymph was placed on each of the four potted p...
